The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 is preloaded with the Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system. The laptop is equipped with ample memory- 8GB. A discrete graphics card also features in the default configurations list. The laptop is fitted with NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX660M, which is capable of working with Microsoft DirectX® 11 technology. The 15.6” HD display is backlit and can render images/video in HD at a native resolution of 1366×768.

The 15.6” HD screen is capable of delivering HD content at 1080p resolution. The Nvidia Optimus technology automatically switches between onboard graphics card and the discrete GPU unit. The on-board graphics processor performs well in easier tasks such as watching videos, while the discrete graphics card takes over during intensive gaming or watching pure HD content.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 delivers 141 fps at a native resolution in World of Warcraft tests. The battery life is quite impressive; the laptop lasted for more than 5 hours even in continuous Wi-Fi mode. The booting time of Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 is greatly reduced. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 configuration with 500GB hard drive having 7200 rpm barely needs 0.53 to boot, which is quite good.
