ASUS ROG G703GX

ASUS ROG G703GX

This is a big beefy gaming powerhouse, billed by ASUS as a full desktop replacement. It’s two inch thick, so not a lightweight machine, but there’s no compromises on performance here. It’s hard to beat this level of gaming power in a laptop computer.

ASUS ROG G703GX: Summary Review

Price is still going to be a factor even when your budget is sky-high. You should just stupidly spend extra just because you can, and that is the main reason why this Asus ROG 2080 laptop is recommended so highly by us.

It’s the acceptable price (it’s still hardly cheap!) combined with a 17.3-inch screen and 144kHZ display mean you are getting pretty much everything you need for portable gaming at this level.

The processor is a meaty Intel i9-9980HK, and it’s also packing 32GB of DDR4 ram in its guts.

As we said, specs are all going to be much of a muchness, but ASUS ROG laptops have built up a decent reputation of late, and there is nothing here that would suggest a downturn any time soon.

This model is also one of the few in the range that comes with G-Sync so, when you add it all up, it’s a bit of a no brainer.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus S: Summary Review

Another ASUS ROG pick, but this one steps forward with a 240Hz refresh rate on its panel which takes it above and beyond most of the other machines in the field.

Until recently these types of refresh rates were the exclusive domain of the desktop PC Masterace, but gradually now they are beginning to come to the fore in the portable arena too.

The screen here is smaller than our other ROG, and the RAM is halved – you are getting ‘just’ 16GB in the Zephyrus. There’s less storage and no G-Sync so you might be thinking, why is it here.

Well besides the luscious refresh rate, which really does step things up for gaming, it’s also considerably cheaper than it’s bigger brother – remember when we said at the start it was going to come down to those individual features you crave that will make up your purchasing mind. Well, there’s no better way to illustrate that than with these two competing models from the same stable.

Donec tristique sem et eros luctus cursus. Vestibulum ac enim lobortis, scelerisque urna vel, consequat nunc. Ut maximus velit a pretium lacinia. Ut tincidunt efficitur malesuada. HP Omen: Summary Review

Okay, so we have mentioned the budget quite a bit so far. What if you really want a 2080 but can’t quite stump up the money you could buy a car with?

This considerably less sexy option from HP could be a problem solver in that situation. For starters, it’s under $2000 – which is a very good price all things considered.

For the price, corners have to be cut somewhere, but thankfully that’s not the case with the display where you get a nice 144Hz 17.3-inch screen. Elsewhere though you will find only a 256GB SSD – although there is an included 1TB SATA hard drive as well, so storage isn’t a problem, just your boot disk and just 16GB of ram.

Supplied CPU is an Intel Core i7-9750H so you can begin to see where some of the processing power of, say the Asus has been lost.

Is the Omen still going to cope – of course, it is. Is it going to make you think you have gone top of the range? Not quite. Are you going to have the best part of $1500 still in your bank if you plump for this one? Yes, you are. Drinks are on you.

MSI GT75 Titan DT

Donec tristique sem et eros luctus cursus. Vestibulum ac enim lobortis, scelerisque urna vel, consequat nunc. Ut maximus velit a pretium lacinia. Ut tincidunt efficitur malesuada. Fusce orci erat, luctus eget nunc sollicitudin, sollicitudin tristique velit. Quisque pretium libero a orci rutrum porta hendrerit id dolor. Integer a tortor nulla.

MSI GT75 Titan DT: Summary Review

Anything with the word ‘Titan’ in the name had better stand up and counted and for getting on for $4000 in its top-specced version you can certainly say that about the price tag.

This Titan also begins to tread the fine line between ‘when is a laptop not a laptop?’ It’s large, cumbersome but very sleek and desirable. It’s a laptop for hardcore gamers with a hardcore wallet to match, and it’s just a great machine all round.

Right of the bat, it’s a huge step up from the Omen. A 240Hz refresh rate spread across a gorgeous 17.3-inch display panel sets the scene for the Intel i9-9900k to strut its stuff.

Storage is in the form of dual 1TB NVME SSDs, and it also comes complete with another 2TB hard drive.

There’s no G-Sync here which seems like an odd omission at this level of hardware, and it is a choice we wouldn’t have made on the design table.

It still stacks up as a fantastic machined for gaming, however, and boy is it built to last. If you have the money – and you can save a few hundred bucks if you go for the 32GB rather than 64GB model – then you will never be disappointed with your choice.

Razer Blade 15

Razer have managed to squeeze top end gaming components like an RTX 2080 GPU, and a beautiful 144Hz display, into a remarkably small frame, coming in at just 0.7 inches thick. With a precisely crafted aluminium chassis, and a brightly coloured per-key backlit keyboard, this is as attractive as it is capable.

Razer Blade 15: Summary Review

Finally, a Razer laptop on the list and it’s a decent way to round off our suggestions. It’s the third machine in our list with a 240Hz refresh on its panel – which here is only a 15.5inch display.

It’s definitely more of the ‘budget’ scale with 16GB DDR4 ram and only half a TB on the SSD – it is very similar to the Zephrus reviewed above, but it is considerably more expensive.

With that in mind if you are a fan of Razer and are brand loyal, look for deals on this as the price will probably drop quite sharply to bring it in line with the rest of the market soon.

The Blade, standing on its own is a great laptop, and you will certainly not be disappointed. Just be aware of what you can get for a similar amount of money at the moment though.

Even within a seemingly narrow category such as RTX 2080 laptops there is still a huge variance in specs and price. Whatever you choose you should know you will be getting a beast of a machine. How much beast you want will come down to individual budget but we are going for the Asus ROG G703GX, as for us, it hits the sweet spot betweenf specs and price. While it may not have a 244Hz refresh rate, its display is large, bright and colourful and the inclusion of G-sync swings it further in its favour.
