The Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431 is an ultra-practical and useful notebook. It is not the prettiest laptop in its price range, but is certainly the most powerful. Powered by the Intel Core i5 processor and supported by Nvidia graphics chip, the Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431 is a fast, dependable laptop that delivers superior graphic performance. The goodies don’t end here. AS3830TG-6431 also boasts of a powerful speaker system and a USB 3.0 port.
In this price range, you are unlikely to find a gaming laptop that delivers as much as this laptop. Of course, it has a few shortcomings such as its bulky size and average looks, but they are, at most, just small specks on its otherwise perfect report card.
The Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431 is moderately good looking. It is not as luxurious and thin as some other laptops in its price line, but that’s alright. Whatever the AS3830TG-6431 lacks in looks, it makes up with its superior performance.
The Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431 is a bit heavy for an ultraportable notebook. It weighs 4.1 pounds, a slight disappointment, especially when some other laptops in this price line weigh almost a pound less.
Its 13.3-inch screen is just average, as is its native display of 1,366×768. While one wishes for a better display quality, the undisputable fact is that the AS3830TG-6431 is a budget gaming laptop with many great features that belie it small price tag. However, to accommodate the low price, the Acer Aspire AS3830TG-6431 had to compromise on a few things. Average looks, decent but unimpressive display, and average-sized keys, slightly below-par keypad, and a smaller-than-usual mouse buttons are a few comprises the AS3830TG-6431 has made. That it chose to comprise on looks rather on performance or usability is impressive, as most budget gaming laptop buyers value these qualities more.
When it comes to essential features such as USB ports, the machine doesn’t disappoint. It has 3 USB ports, one of which is USB 3.0 capable. It also has a slot for a multiformat card. In addition, the AS3830TG-6431 comes with a decent webcam (1.3 megapixels). The hard drive has a space of 500GB, which is just about the average for this price range. Unlike other ultraportables, Acer’s laptop has an impressive speaker system.

The AS3830TG-6431 hits all the right notes here. Its 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-2410M is an impressive performer, as our tests proved. While testing, we found it to be substantially faster than Apple MacBook Air 13-inch and Samsung Series 9.
Its Cinebench R11.5 CPU score was 2.57, which is substantially higher than Mac Air (1.1) and Series 9 (1.36). In comparison to these two, the AS3830TG-6431 had a better timing in our Handbrake test. While Mac Air and Series 9 recorded a timing of 4 minutes, 28 seconds and 4 minutes, 45 seconds respectively in the video encoding test, this Acer laptop completed the test in less than 2 minutes. In addition, its Photoshop CS5 reading of 4 minutes, 20 seconds were substantially better than Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (10 mins 50 sec) and slightly better than Series 9 (5 minutes 53 seconds).
In the PCMark Vantage test, which measures the overall system performance of a laptop, the AS3830TG-6431 scored an impressive 5,841 points. In addition, the laptop performed brilliantly in our in-house iTunes Conversion Test. In this custom test, we converted 15 MP3 songs into AAC format on the Acer laptop. It completed the task in less than the average recorded time for budget gaming laptops.
The NVidia’s Optimus technology is one feature in this Acer laptop you would want to write home about. This technology allows it to automatically switch between NVidia GeForce GT 540M and Intel HD 3000. The AS3830TG-6431 switches to the NVidia GeForce graphics processor whenever extra horsepower is required, and when the load is not demanding, it automatically falls back on the Intel HD 3000 integrated chipset.
Its choice of battery emits a mixed response. While one cannot help but praise the long life of its battery (in our battery test, the AS3830TG’s battery lasted for 8 hours 18 minutes), at the same time, one wishes Acer had not opted for an irremovable battery.
Excellent productivity and 3D performance
Excellent battery life
